PROGRAMME SECTORS -  4. ECOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

Agricultural workers are often considered to be unskilled people engaged in a ‘poor man’s occupation’. However, we are convinced that agriculture can be profitable if the skills of agricultural workers are recognized and strengthened. By educating and organising communities to manage their resources, DBDS enables them to develop their lands, improve their access to water, adopt appropriate technology and acquire new skills that will help them make their traditional occupations profitable.

At present, our communities are engaged in watershed development, horticulture, organic farming, agro forestry, poultry and goatery, and setting up bio gas plants.

Watershed Development

Communities that take up watershed programmes are able to develop their water resources and raise the productivity of the degraded land, thereby increasing their income. While this programme has already been successfully completed in several villages, other villages are now enthusiastically involved in it:

Our future plans include the establishment of an eco-centre at Karjat, where we are currently experimenting with recycling of water and household waste, production of cooking gas from waste, and production of charcoal from natural materials.
