  Internships at DBDS

Purpose of the internship programme

1. DBDS offers internship possibilities for graduate and post-graduate students, from Indian as well as other overseas universities. These internships are intended to increase the intern's understanding of current development issues, especially issues connected to DBDS focus areas.

2. The relationship between DBDS and the intern is one of mutual benefit. Interns are involved in: researching development issues, designing development projects, carrying out monitoring and evaluation of projects, as well as being involved in field operations of ongoing projects.  As part of the internship programme, DBDS will enable the interns gain a comprehensive understating on current development issues through a series of information sessions conducted by its staff.

Qualifications required

3. The participants in the internship programme are selected from students pursuing graduate and post-graduate level studies.  Preference will be given to those who have specialized in development issues. Applicants must be sponsored by an academic institution and must have a good command of English

Internship duration

4. Internships are for a minimum period of two months, while the maximum duration of internships at DBDS is six months. When applying for an internship, candidates should indicate clearly the period of internship they intend to undertake.  Internships are possible throughout the year.

Conditions of service

5. Interns are assigned to work with a supervisor who is responsible for providing them with a description of duties and a workplan. Upon completion of the internship, both the supervisor and the intern are required to complete a final report describing what was achieved during the internship. In addition, every intern is requested to complete an evaluation questionnaire on his/her assignment and to submit it to the DBDS office.

6. Interns are expected to submit a copy of the completed research project to the DBDS office.

7. DBDS internships are not remunerated. Overseas interns are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and for obtaining visas. During the period of internship, boarding and lodging would normally be provided by DBDS.  However, in some situations inters may be asked to make their own boarding and lodging arrangements.

8. DBDS accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Interns must have their own health insurance. In case of illness or other circumstances which might prevent the completion of the internship, interns will inform their supervisor and the university to which they belong.

Procedure for applying

9. Applicants should submit the following documentation:

  • a covering letter stating the reason for applying to the internship programme;

  • a brief note detailing the intended research work;
