INVEST MORE IN VARSITIES' RESEARCH SAYS PACHAURI

JANUARY 4, 2008: Nobel Laureate and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, R K Pachauri, has asked the union government to invest more in the university system of the country on research regarding alternative energy technologies and to formulate strategies to lessen climate change.

Mr. Pachauri, while speaking on the sidelines of a talk organized by the Indian Advertising Association, said, "Presently there is not enough research being carried out in development of new technologies. The government needs to spend more on the university system in the country since more ideas and breakthroughs come from there."

The 'global leader' for climate campaign also pointed out the need to spread awareness about climate change presently. "Our institute will soon be starting a global campaign to increase awareness," said Pachauri, who is also the Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute. Pachauri shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former American vice-president Al Gore for his spreading awareness about global climate change. He also emphasized on the need for introducing methods for mitigating climate change at the state level in the country. (edunews.net)
