APRIL 26, 2008: The ‘Sewing Training Programme’ conducted by the Development Office in collaboration with the Clothing Manufacturer Association of India (CMAI) at Jyoti, Virar West, came to a successful completion on April 26, with the Valedictory Ceremony held in the parish hall. 20 women from Jyoti and Arnala were trained in sewing through this programme. The objective of the training was to empower these economically backward women with a skill so as to enable them to earn a living.
In his introductory speech, Fr. James Tuscano welcomed all the dignitaries present and expressed his profound gratitude to CMAI for having supported the training programme. He further said that the next batch of women were ready and were looking forward to receiving the training. Mr. Lourdes Baptista, addressing the gathering, pointed out that a variety of new employment opportunities were presently emerging, but to access these opportunities one needs to have the relevant skills. He too expressed his hope that many women would be trained in different skills and that this would enhance their economic and social status.
The Chief Guest Mr. Kulkarni, in his address, said that CMAI as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility was committed to improving the life of poor and disadvantaged people. He reiterated that skills training was one of the best means of empowerment and that this would make the women economically independent. He also promised that CMAI would help obtain sewing contracts for the trained women.
After the speeches, certificates were distributed to the participants of the training programme. This was followed by a short cultural programme staged by the village programme. Finally, Mrs. Runa D’Cunha proposed the vote of thanks.
